Shaman's Journey

An Invitation to Writers

Have you enjoyed the journey in this ‘universe’ so far?  Would you like to contribute a story to the ongoing journey of discovery as Jim and Blair explore what shamanism means to them and how it impacts on their work and their lives?

If so, you’re invited to consider writing a story in this ‘universe’.  However, we wish to retain elements of continuity, so stories must fit certain, generic criteria:

  • Must be a case story;
  • Must have romance;
  • Jim is a hereditary shaman/sentinel; his gifts are his five enhanced senses, his visions, and his ability to heal his guide;
  • Blair is a ‘called’ shaman/guide (returned from death and learns his skills); his gifts are healing, visions, spirit walking and empathy;
  • They learn more about their shaman roles from Ben Thundercloud, Dan Wolf’s tribal shaman;
  • Any story that takes them back to the Temple should bring back Manuel (Mano) d’Angeles, the shaman who helped heal Blair of shaman sickness;
  • Blair is a profiler as needed but, most of the time, he’s simply Jim’s partner (any serial killer scenario would require the use of Blair’s profiler skills);
  • Both are still grappling with his role as a cop; there is room for a storyline that takes Blair into a consultant role, but once introduced, it would become part of the storyline ‘continuity guide’ or ‘bible’ from then on;
  • Simon and Naomi are a couple until or if that relationship breaks up;
  • Rafe and Megan are a couple, caring for Rafe’s sister, Trina (a teenager);
  • Minimum fifty pages long and beta’d;
  • Update the continuity guide or ‘bible’ for the reference of subsequent writers.
  • May include scenarios as they learn about shamanism, they learn the principles and ethics that must guide the use of their abilities ie must always be selfless, to aid the vulnerable, to support justice, etc.  The use of shaman skills for selfish purposes (ie, Blair is playing with his skills and abilities now, not maliciously, but it could be dangerous in terms of leading to abuse; for example,  spirit walking for convenience) has serious consequences … can darken the soul, lead to self indulgence, rationalizations, and ultimately to evil.  Stories about confrontations with a super evil shaman or necromancer are encouraged, but Jim and Blair shouldn’t ‘win’ the first time around, as they have a lot to learn, so ‘winning’ early on against a mature and skilled shaman wouldn’t be credible.  Once introduced, this ‘evil shaman’ could be a continuing ‘bad guy’ in various stories in which they drive him/her off but never triumph.  Ultimately, there will have to be a ‘win’ story, but let’s not waste a good bad guy by winning too soon … or, after he’s captured/subdued, maybe he could ‘escape’ somehow, LOL.  Like Kincaid!

We know this may seem burdensome, but these are key and core continuity elements in this ‘universe’.  But even within these parameters, there are endless possibilities for cases, romantic upsets or confrontations as well as mellow or hot moments.  The physical aspects of their relationship can be as subtle or explicit as the muses dictate.

There is no schedule for the production of new stories.  Again, they will emerge or not as the muses wish.

For assistance in illustrating your stories, see the Artists List for contacts.  (Rule of thumb:  illos for cover and end pieces, and then every five to ten pages.)
